A Non-blind, Randomized. Parallel Group Comparison of Intron-A® and Hydroxyurea vs. Hydroxyurea Alone in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

Abstract

|
Twenty patients with Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myelogenous leukemia
(CML) in the chronic phase were entered into non-blind, randomized, parallel group
comparison study of Intron-A® and hydroxyurea vs. hydroxyurea alone.
Seven out of 10 patients in Intron-A® and hydroxyurea group showed
complete hematologic remission and 2, partial hematologic remission. One patient in
hydroxyurea only group was found to lave trisomy 8 after several weeks of treatment,
and was excluded subsequently. So, 9 patients were evaluated. and all of them were
progressed to accelerated phase or blastic crisis between 6 to 11 months after beginning
of the hydroxyuea treatment. Performance status, quality of life at diagnosis, age, sex
didn't affect the result of each treatment. Side effects were minimal in both group and
there was no treatment- associated mortality. These results show that
Intron-A® and hydroxyurea is safe and, is superior to hydroxy urea alone
in the treatment of CML in chronic phase.
